FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQ's: FAQ

Is the Swindon Flag part of Swindon Borough Council?

NO! The Swindon flag is a privately made design by Swindon resident, Torin Clements. The flag design has been made to represent Swindon as a Town and Borough, this means it must be above politics and remain inclusive, this is done by focusing on the town's heritage achievements.

The design has no affiliations with or involvement from Swindon Borough Council. Adding to this the design is unofficial so at this time it cannot have any political or governmental involvement.

The only time the flag design should be involved in any manner of local politics is if it is sent in for council feedback and opinions or if it becomes popular enough to gain public acceptance leading to a vote for adoption by Swindon Borough Council.

Why doesn't the flag use the colour Red?

Whilst the colours of Red and White do feature on the Swindon coat of arms, red is not as prominent as azure blue. Swindon's sports teams utilise red and white which is where the assumption has arisen. Blue can be seen on the mantle around the top of Swindon's coat of arms as well as the central shield. The mantle is where the primary colours of a coat of arms are located and are the basis of the flag design's two main colours. Gold is featured on the symbols of the coat of arms.

The borough's coat of arms was gifted to the town within the Borough charter signed by Queen Victoria in 1900.

Red was attempted multiple times however it continued to contrast poorly with the design elements and would go against the fundamental basics of flag design principles.

Will the flag affect the towns sports teams which use red and white?

No, the flag design doesn't affect them, the flag design represents Swindon's Motto. Sports teams will not need to worry, an example of how both colour sets can co-exist is the City of Leicester.

The City of Leicester's flag is predominantly Red and White whilst Leicester City FC uses Blue and Gold. Sports teams like Swindon Town Football Club, Swindon Robins and Swindon Wildcats to name a few, would be able to retain their colours and identities without any concerns.

A Sports version of the Swindon flag is actively being worked on.

Why doesn't the flag feature roundabouts or cars

The flag aims to focus on what made Swindon what it is today. Modern Swindon owes its existence to the GWR's Swindon Locomotive Works, without it the town's borough status would not have happened.

It is true that the impact of the car is significant on Swindon post-war and into the present day. The timeframe of this industry in Swindon is smaller in comparison to the railway works which had produced locomotives for over 150 years. This is why the White colour is used to represent the industries of present-day Swindon with White being a popular car colour.

- Roundabouts -

The Magic Roundabout is actually subtly referenced within the design, look out for the 5 circles hidden on the railway wheel itself.
